It is a question of approximately two thousand slot machines (also known as NewSlots) distributed through the whole city, connected and controlled by the Autonomous Administration of Monopolies of the State.
They are played with coins of fifty cents and one euro and the maximum profit does not overcome a hundred euros. Although by manipulating the software with which the slots work it is possible to obtain higher revenue like those of the slot machines of traditional casinos.
The competition is not fair. Slot machines at bars and commercial places do not have the costs of maintenance or of management (personnel, skill, promotion, buy and depreciation) that those installed at the casinos. In the last two years, the slot machines installed in bars and businesses of the city of San Remo have turned into strong competitors of the casinos.
In 2008, they registered profits for 180 million euros. In the same period, traditional casinos, with their 550 slot machines, registered profits for 54,5 million euros.
